Apple Music allows you to save your songs, albums and playlists to your iPhone or Mac for offline listening, which could be a boon if you’re watching your data cap.

'Show Apple Music' is an option to enable Apple Music, and when you turn off it, Apple Music is hidden, which provides you another way to relaunch Apple Music. On your Mac

Launch iTunes, and click through to an album, song, or playlist you want to download to your Mac. I chose Bassnectar’s amazing new release, “Into the Sun” to try out.

Once you’ve gotten the album (or song or playlist) up on iTunes, click on the little ellipsis to the right of the title and choose Add to My Music. Then, hop on over to the My Music tab at the top of the iTunes window and click through. You can scroll or search to find the Apple Music album or playlist there.

To download the track, click on the little iCloud button (like a little cloud with a downward arrow coming out of the bottom) for the album, playlist or song you want to download. Boom! You’re cooking without data.

Should you want to take the song off your computer, simply right click on the track (or album or playlist) name in the My Music section of iTunes, and choose Remove Download from the resulting contextual menu.

On your iPhone

The Music app on your iPhone makes things a bit easier. Once you’ve launched the app on your iPhone, simply navigate to the song, album or playlist that you want to download to your device, and tap on the ellipsis to the right of the title. You’ll get a big slide up menu and you can tap Make Available Offline there. This will both download the target music as well as add it to My Music. Your iPhone will automatically download the tracks (if it’s connected to a Wi-Fi or data network) and you can then listen to the downloaded songs as often as you like. Note that every bit of music you Make Available Offline will take up some of your iPhone storage space, so you’re trading networking data for media space on your device.

The music you add to My Music will show up across all your Apple Music devices; Bassnectar’s album showed up for me on my iPhone in the My Music section while the Amy Winehouse album showed up on my Mac after I made it available for download (hence adding it to My Music) on my iPhone.

The download status is device specific, though, meaning that my iPhone downloaded Amy Winehouse while my Mac was the only device to download Bassnectar.

But it comes at a cellular cost, especially if you have a smaller data plan. And even if you have a massive cellular plan, there are places where streaming music just doesn't make sense: airplanes, for instance, or camping trips.

How to add a playlist to your local library for offline listening

Launch the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
Go to the playlist you want to download.
Tap the More button (looks like •••) to the right of the music.
Tap on Make Available Offline
The playlist and its included songs should immediately begin downloading to your device; you can see their progress by tapping the download bar at the top of the screen. After the playlist is finished downloading, you'll find it in your local playlists.

How to view songs you've saved locally to your iPhone or iPad

Launch the Music app from your Home screen.
Tap on the My Music tab.
Select the view type dropdown (by default, it reads 'Albums') from the middle of the screen.
Switch Show Music Available Offline to on at the bottom of the pop-up.

To reverse this, tap the dropdown again and turn the Show Music Available Offline switch off.

If you've downloaded entire albums or playlists, you'll also be able to tell if they're locally stored even without enabling the 'Show Music Available Offline' switch: Just view the album or playlist; if it's been saved offline, you'll see a tiny grey iPhone icon in the upper right corner.

How to remove songs from your iPhone or iPad

Make sure the Show Music Available Offline switch (found within the view type dropdown in My Music) is enabled.
Change the view type dropdown to whatever you're looking to delete—albums, genres, songs, etc.
Tap the More button (looks like •••)
Tap Remove Downloads.

What about the Mac?

If you have a laptop that lives alongside your desktop, you may want to tell what it is you've downloaded locally or not. Here's how to go about that.

Open iTunes
Go to the My Music tab.
Click on the view type dropdown in the upper right corner of the screen.
Select the Show Columns dropdown.
Click on the iCloud Download option.

A cloud icon should appear next to your other song sort types; next to each song, you'll either see no icon (which means the song is locally stored); a cloud icon with a downward arrow for songs stored in iCloud Music Library; or a cloud icon with a line through it (for PDFs and other iCloud-ineligible tracks).
